The benefits of coconut water have received loads of press over the last couple of years helping it become the 'in' superfood.
But what is coconut water? What are the real benefits, and how should you consume it? Let me explain the main benefits and give you some guidance on how to enjoy this sweet and hydrating drink before you start guzzling it with reckless abandon.
What is Coconut Water?
Coconut water (not to be confused with high-fat coconut milk) is a completely natural and super hydrating drink originating from the centre of young coconuts. It is jam packed with potassium and other essential electrolytes, as well as naturally occuring and easy to digest sugars. However, from my experience coconut water's slightly sweet and nutty flavour is an acquired taste, with some praising it from the rooftops and others describing it as sweet sickly water, try it and see what you think!
The Benefits of Coconut Water:
A completely natural sports drink packed with electrolytes to replace lost fluids from exercise (also great for hangovers!)
Rich in other trace minerals which are great for health including magnesium, calcium, and potassium which many are deficient in.
It is relatively low in sugar compared to sodas, sports drinks, and fruit juices. This makes it a better alternative for those looking to replace the sugar packed drinks with something healthier.
The Bottom Line
There are many other benefits claimed by the producers of coconut water products but none of these have been backed up by science, so dont beleive everything you read. In my opinion coconut water is a much healthier alternative to luminous coloured sports drinks and is rich in some useful minerals making it a cleaner way to hydrate. On the flipside it still contains a fair amount of sugar meaning that its not the weight loss miracle some will claim, but for those looking to reduce their sugar intake from sodas, fruit juices, or other snacks they could do a lot worse than sipping on coconut water as a replacement.
Tip: Sip on coconut water during an intense training session to replace essential minerals and provide some instant energy in the form of easily digestable sugars. Alternatively try mixing a carton of coconut water with a scoop of protein for the ultimate natural post workout drink.
